Help, I Need to Replace My Mag Release!
We’ve gotten quite a few questions recently from California JRC owners wondering how they convert their fixed magazine release (bullet button) back to the standard push-to-drop magazine release.
It’s pretty simple to accomplish – all you need is a screwdriver and a part that costs less than $20 and you’ll be good to go.
Here’s the scoop straight from the GM at the factory:
Then, either press or drive out that bolt which will remove the pressed in button. Thread the replacement button onto the replacement stem (if not already done so), insert the spring onto the stem and place into the Magwell through the hole and out the backside. Screw on the mag catch with the beveled side towards the internal Magwell.
Finally, replace the whole assembly with a Magazine Catch Assembly available here on the website for $18.25 including shipping. Just click the button below.

Holy cow! It’s like y’all were reading my mind. After making my JR.45 featureless (it’s a California thing!) with the addition of a Thordsen Gen III stock, all I needed was a mag release. Checked the website and what do you know? There it is! Looking forward to liberating the JR from the safe.
Thanks, Eric. It’s always our goal to put out information that is helpful. Let us know if there are other topics that are of interest.
Can you tell me exactly what you did to make your JR California compliant.. I have a JR .40 that I want to make compliant. I understand the Thordsen Gen III stock, but I am not sure about the bullet button, my understanding is that removing the bullet button and putting in a regular mag release does not make it compliant? If im wrong or need to do anything different I would appreciate knowing.. Maybe JR could put more info up for those of us who own a JR Carbine and want to make it compliant.
We don’t use the Thordsen stock on our CA model. To make our 2018 California compliant model, we use our standard magazine release and threaded barrel, pin the stock to a fixed length, put a paddle grip cover over the pistol grip and ship it with a 10 round magazine. You can read more here or here.
